MADAME AMELIA OPENING SEQUENCES

Third Draft of Opening

In our Final edit of our opening I made the sound of the bee's louder and longer to
make the audiences skin crawl but also i edited the fangs so the flash when we see them
which causes us to jump but also added a sound effect to make it even more scarier.
I added rain sound effects to make it seem like Amelia came to the church on a different day to explain her story - it created a dark atmosphere as rain is never a good sign in horror movies.

Melina played a really big role in the editing of our opening sequence, however we did try to make this a fair play, and constantly gave her feedback, because we were not as experienced as her in using the software, when we realized that some amendments were needed, Melina would happily fix it up and also add new things to the opening sequence to make it proficient. We are very happy with the final cut of our Opening sequence, because we all spent a lot of time and effort on it. If we were not one of those who were editing or doing the explicit work; we were the ones doing behind the scenes footage, and marketing and researching on why and how we did this opening sequence- justifying our reasons for every tiny little detail within our opening sequence.

Second draft of our Opening sequence

In the second draft of our opening sequence we cut the blood scenes as the shots already used such as the vampire fangs signify what is or has happened. We also felt that not having the blood shots would leave the audience wanting to know more about Amelia's character but also gave it more of film noir feel as its a sort of mystery. Also we had an issue with the blood because we made loads of it but couldn't use it as it would make a mess on the set and would be a risk to the actors and crew - Also it would take a while to clean it and then reshoot again, so in order to save time and keep everyone safe we didn't use it.

Progress on Edit 2.

  • In our second version of our film we definitely look more professional.  Our chosen distributor and company logo are incorporated into the very beginning.  This makes the audience want to watch it more already, as now it cannot appear to be a half-hearted approach and look naff, but is worth taking the time to watch.  It gives our film a sense of importance.
  • Chopin Soundtrack-  Our final sound automatically takes away the more generalized sense of sadness we are trying to create, and makes it unique.  It creates an on-edge, unbalanced, forlorn atmosphere and very effortlessly fits into the genre of film Noir.  It brings in the element of romance and reflects the depth of her thoughts and feelings.  It is beautiful yet creepy, setting the audience up exactly the way we want to.  We did not want to automatically throw them into the gore and scare, but allow them to create an emotional attachment to Amelia.  It is on a loop, which is not the most noticeable aspect of the sound, however it creates a sense of a droning, never ending life or feeling.
  • One difference in picture that was carefully discussed, is the fact that Fred is now seen almost as a pure black figure.  In comparison to the previous edit, he is darker in color so no idea is given off about who he may be.  This was because we wanted him to be even more mysterious, which makes it that little bit more exciting for the audience  Also, it emphasizes the vampire iconography.  The fact that very commonly you never are fully introduced to the main vampire in the opening sequence.  The audience are now questioning who this person is, what role does he have in Amelia's life?
  • Marigold titling-  Our titling is now in place.  It further signifies to the audience that this is going to be a vampire film. Through the use of the colour red it automatically creates the idea there's going to be blood shed and danger is surrounding the main character.  The chosen style reflects an image of fangs.  It is white and sharp, further showing iconography of vampires in a creative and different way.
  • At this point, we have decided to scrap the use of blood and defying the iconography of typical/iconic fangs.  We thought long and hard about whether to keep the crying blood shot and eventually came to the decision to remove it.  We shot various times trying to get a clean shot of it looking like Nausicaa was crying., however it was not as successful as we'd hoped.  It looked fairly naff and was not effective.  From our feedback it was noted that without the shot it didn't make any difference to the desired message/narrative of our film, so we cut it completely.
  • We also played with fangs to make them look like we initially planned, defying the conventions, however this also was an issue and wasted time.  We eventually turned to the alternative of using the stereotypical image of fangs.  As time was most definitely not on our side, we had to be sharp in the way we approached adding fangs into the film.  As you can see, the ending is a fairly static image of an open mouth and fangs, clearly showing that he is going to use them to bite her.  What we want to think about for the next/final edit is potentially adding some sort of climax to the action and also music.  We have said that we want to set the audience up for the unexpected.  Therefore, through this last shot we want to create a scare, a change of pace and  real signifier that this is the ending of our opening sequence.
  • Music/sound wise we have discussed the idea of adding in some conventional sounds from a horror movie.  At the moment we have three clips juxtaposing the dollying forward behind Amelia.  These have him heavily breathing, which is iconic, however the end image is off-key at the moment as the orchestral, classic type of sound is continued.  We also noted that this will be the main scare factor of our film, as right now the pace is fairly monotone and consistent, with the same soundtrack on a loop.
  • We also changed the dialogue from the previous draft.  It was noted that the dialogue wasn't particularly clear and didn't make much sense.  We tried to adapt it to emphasize the issues in our film and have a voice over that related more to our narrative.
  • 2 months later- We added a title signifying the change in time.  This was due to environmental change of Nausicaa dying her hair a completely different colour.  This is something we initially panicked about, because we were aware that we could not help the situation.  We debated using a wig but thought the best way and most effective way would be to simply let the audience know it's a change in time.  We found that it was a positive yet unexpected change, as prostitutes change their image for different customers, this inspiration coming from the blonde wig and natural brown hair in pretty woman.

First Edit of our Opening Sequence

This is was our initial opening sequence.
at the time we didn't have all our shots and so we had to use marker until
we could get the shot we wanted.

Progress on edit 1.
Our first edit is very much a working progress.  We came unstuck when the hotel that agreed to let us use their room cancelled at the last minute.  We not only had to come up with an alternative but had to re-schedule with cast members which was a hassle.  We delayed filming for two weeks because of cast availability.  Therefore our first edit had to be published lacking in raw footage for the last setting of our film.
With our production process at this current stage, fonts are being researched and explored.  However we cannot yet get carried away and think about adding them to our film.
The music used is to simply create a general sense of the mood/atmosphere, it is not the final sound.  This needs to be taken into consideration as it will not have the full desired effect until the right soundtrack is chosen.

Behind The Scenes - Bedroom Scene

Here is some behind the scenes footage on the Hotel/bedroom scene

This may have not been the best recorded video as it was shot with a mobile phone, but we did that on purpose because we wanted it to be very spontaneous and make it more of a fun vlog, rather than a documentary of behind the scenes. As you can see from this video, I was director of Set Design therefore, when we had trouble in getting a hotel room or an available space for this particular scene, and had to use our school theater, I had to use what we had and bring props from home (this included one suitcase of my items of clothing, shoes, accessories, and products a girl would have in her bedroom). We worked great as a group and I believe that I managed to face problems with great care, for example, in the video you can see that i was suddenly hit with the problem that one of our group members had forgotten to bring pillows, I was able to face the situation with ease and was quickly able to Come up with a back up (going to our textiles class to see if they had pillows, if not we could have made them using school items)
